He carried the bags into the room and set them down. She walked in behind him, her arms wrapped around it. It was the color of tree bark. Its skin was shiny and hard with pointed jagged shards rising in places. A deep crater was notched into its skull. It had no eyes, nose or mouth. A large gaping wound led into its black stomach and it sat motionless against the wall.

Beanty stood some 20 feet from it, studying its size and shape, cautiously watching for signs of movement.

Slowly, he began to sniff the air around him. He thought immediately of his food in the dishes on the floor and what might happen when night fell. There were few hiding places and he wondered which would be sufficient.

From his position on the floor, Beanty watched as she chattered happily and grabbing it by its open skull, carried it to the next room. It made the sound of chafing reeds as it rocked back and forth.

Holding his body an inch from the carpet he moved quickly to follow them. His chubby cumberbund swung hurriedly from side to side. She handled it carelessly. Beanty’s eyes grew wide with horror.

Prepared to run, he turned his head to get a clear view of the door and felt the air rush by his face as she quickly swept him into her arms.

He tried frantically to right his body but she flipped him in, and in an instant he had been offered as a sacrifice.
